The Diamond membership also allows for FREE parking at the WAP (Parking is always free at the SDZ) as well as coupons to get 2 people in free to each park and 2 for 1 coupons for the ZooBus, free arial tram rides at the SDZ, & a subscription to the ZooNews Magazine. This membership allows two people entrance to both the Wild Animal Park (WAP) and the San Diego Zoo (SDZ). It is an excellent value as, for $96 (or $126 depending on when and how you buy it), you can be a Diamond Member. Every other year, my husband and I purchase a season pass.

I live in Escondido and have visited the Wild Animal Park many times. It was a pricey day, but well worth the cost. There were a lot of new babies in enclosures, and the up close viewing can't be beat. We also did an afternoon photo safari, which was really fun, although we did only get to feed the giraffes and no rhinos as we had done in the past. The only downside is that there were a couple of kids whose parents allowed them essentially to monopolize the guides attention, and to generally make a nuisance of themselves. Afterwards the cheetah came out on a leash with the trainer, and we got photos of her relaxing and got to hear the purr! The excursion was $60 or $65 per person, and my husband and I thought it was worth every penny. In between the runs, while the cheetah rested in her air-conditioned tent, we were treated to an up close visit with a perigrine falcon, and then a flying demonstration. We were told that some of the excursions can be cancelled if the weather is too hot, or may only get in one run if the cat is not wanting to run. The actual "run" lasted only about 20 seconds - but you can't expect more from the fastest land mammal! We were fortunate to get in two runs the day was not overlly hot, and the cheetah was happy to be there. The zookeepers spent considerable time talking to us about the cheetah program, and showing us some of the training tools used with the cats. There was a long fence line next to the "run" which guaranteed everyone a front row view. A nice surprise! They had a safari-like tent area set up with shaded seating and "restrooms" (really porta-potties under a tent).

We traveled in a truck to the site (I'm sure the drive will improve once all of the construction is completed) to a tented area, where we were offered refreshments to start our visit - fresh fruit, tea, lemonde, cookies, water. We were not disappointed! The Cheetah experience was amazing - they only run it once a day and only on the weekends looks like the group will max out at about 25 people.

We also booked the Cheetah Landing excursion which promised a cheetah at full speed. This was our second visit to the WAP - we were actually staying up in Los Angeles, but we enjoyed our Photo Safari so much a few years back, we decided to take the longer drive south to do it again.
